As Requested: A List of Mitt Romney’s Lies

On Twitter tonight, I had the ill-begotten pleasure of getting into a discussion with a Christian Conservative under the name of @CoFemale. Ordinarily, anyone that I follow has usually shown a sense of intelligence and/or humor. However, as most people who know me can attest, I have a very low tolerance for ignorance.

CoFemale describes herself thusly on her blog:

As a Conservative Christian woman, I don’t sit idly by and keep quiet like a “good little woman”. Sometimes my views are spot on and unrelenting, sometimes they are supporting and heartwarming, sometimes they might make your head explode. I am not here to please anyone. My views are my views, I own them. You may not like them, but at least you know where I stand. Here are some of the things I support:

  1. God – Master and creator of the universe
  2. Jesus – My Savior
  3. Bible – God’s word
  4. Family – Seven grand kids – one in heaven.
  5. Pro-life – killing a baby is murder no matter how you color the reason.
  6. Conservative women and men –
  7. Glenn Beck – thorn in sides of the left – hallelujah
  8. Rick Santorum – strong family values
  9. Golden Retriever’s – they are always so cute.

Sounds pretty reasonable, right? A conservative with courage of conviction through faith and stands up for what she believes in. I would never find ignorance in someone as being that they don’t believe the way I do. I find ignorance in logical things like:

  1. Not reading what was written and understanding it before attacking someone.
  2. Following and/or supporting someone or something without being educated about that someone or something.
  3. Being rude to someone without cause.
  4. Being hypocritical

In fact, many times I’ll use the slogan “Speaking Truth to Stupid”. That’s what I do. I, generally, do not speak about anything, especially political, unless I know what I’m talking about. Whether it is through direct experience or related research, if you find me in a discussion, or debate, you can be assured that I do not speak in ignorance.

Even when I write a blog, I spend hours researching; not only my viewpoint, but the opposing viewpoint as well. It generally takes me 4-6 hours to write one blog. Not because I’m slow, but because when I give a fact, I will back it up. When I make a statement, I’ll provide sources.

What does all this have to do with CoFemale? Quite simply, the discussion started when I saw a post from a user that was stating not to vote for Mitt Romney. CoFemale responded to that tweet by saying “No Obama”. So, me being me, I figured I’d jump in. This was my tweet:

I agree with both of you. Nobama and QuitMitt. Especially QuitMitt – No room for lying to the people.

This, incidentally, is how I feel. I absolutely don’t trust Mitt Romney and Obama, bless his inexperienced efforts, has lied to the American People as well. Imagine my surprise when I am responded to by CoFemale, in support of Mitt Romney: “Tell me one thing Mitt has lied about? As far as I am concerned Obama is the ONLY LIAR.”

It is a funny thing when a conversation degenerates before it even starts. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, though, so my reply was simple enough. I simply replied that he had, hypocritically, demanded his opponent’s tax records in his last two campaigns while refusing to give his.

In 1998, Romney was bidding for Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. In that campaign, he repeatedly called Kennedy out for not releasing his tax returns. He grilled the Senator and accused him of hiding something. Through it all, Senator Kennedy refused to release his taxes, yet Romney did not release his either. Instead, he offered Kennedy a deal. He stated that he would release his taxes the day that Kennedy’s taxes were released. Romney ended up losing in that Senatorial race.

In 2002, Romney was bidding Governor of Massachusetts against Shannon O’Brien. O’Brien wanted transparency and called for Romney to release his taxes. In mind of Romney’s previous campaign against Ted Kennedy, O’Brien released her taxes, and the entire Democratic Senate released theirs, as well. Rather than accept this and release his own, Governor Romney mounted an attack on O’Brien to deflect attention away from him. His claim: O’Brien’s husband had not released is taxes. Romney claimed that O’Brien was attempting to hide something from the public.

In the 2002 race, as with today, much media attention was given towards Romney’s refusal to release his taxes. The common response to journalists was, “We’re not releasing the taxes. You are just going to have to trust us.” The pressure was on, however, and the Democratic Party sought to have Romney evicted from the ballot pending an investigation of his residency.

Massachusetts law states that a candidate for Governor must have been a resident of the State for 7 years before his candidacy. As it turns out, Romney’s repeated denials to release his tax returns and his constant assertions that he did, indeed, pay taxes as a dual citizen of both Utah and Massachusetts were to hide the truth.

In June of 2002, Romney held a press conference to admit to his false statements. Romney said he had paid his taxes as a Massachusetts resident while in Utah. But, he acknowledged that that was not true, and confessed that in April 2002, after deciding to run for governor, he had amended his 1999 and 2000 tax returns to say that he was actually a resident of Massachusetts and proceeded to retroactively pay his taxes to the State of Massachusetts.

Despite all the shouting that Romney had done for everyone else to show their taxes, it was Mitt Romney that had something to hide. Now, in 2012, Mitt Romney’s tactics have been turned on him once again. After controversial reports about his association with Bain Capital, specifically whether he was running Bain up to 2002, the issue of Romney’s taxes has become two-fold: Did Romney pay the taxes he was required to pay and how much did he evade taxation by transferring money to offshore accounts.

With the release of Romney’s tax returns, all the questions about tax evasion and Bain Capital would be answered. Yet, once again, Romney is telling the American People: “I am not going to release my taxes; you are just going to have to trust me that I paid all the taxes that were required of me.”

It was here, in Michigan, that Romney’s own father (Former Governor of Michigan) set the precedent for releasing 10 years worth of tax returns. Yet, Romney does not have that kind of integrity within him. Having already been caught lying to the American People, in 2002, Republican candidate Romney was allowed to stay on the ballot after a ruling by a commission composed of three Republicans, one Democrat and one Independent.

I want to satisfy this CoFemale, however, so why don’t we just keep going with the list of Romney Lies?

Mitt Romney stated:

When President Obama said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen”, he was saying success is the result of government, not hard-working people.

  • When you read the full text of President Obama’s speech, you find that Mitt Romney severely distorted the context of that statement. Obama’s message, and point, was nothing close to what Romney’s political machine turned it into.
  • This is ironic, though, since Romney himself dealt with similar negative attacks when opponents claimed that he said “he liked firing people”.
  • In this campaign, Romney has repeatedly distorted Obama’s speeches and statements by picking one or two sentences out of context.
  • I’ve included a text file with the full speech so that you may read the words in context. The speech, in fact, was meant to convey that we, together, as Americans have built this country. That Government, Businesses, and the American People together can achieve anything. Shame on Romney, and the blind sheep that follow him, for being so intentionally ignorant.

Stimulus money went to buy electric cars from Finland as a payback to Obama supporters.

  • That money was a loan through the Energy Department’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program. That program was not part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is known as the Stimulus. In fact, the program was signed by President George W. Bush in 2007. President Obama had nothing to do with this as it pre-dates his Presidency.
  • Further statements were made suggesting that Obama promised new jobs from this alleged stimulus overseas. Reference was made to a Fisker Automotive plant in Delaware and accusations that it never opened. The truth is that the plant hasn’t opened because Fisker Automotive never received the Federal Loan needed to do so.

ObamaCare puts the Federal Government between you and your doctor

  • A similar claim was made from a different source (one which it is presumed that Romney’s claims may have originated). As it happens, that source’s claim is known as Politicfact’s 2010 Lie of the Year.
  • The Romney campaign was asked to explain exactly how the Affordable Care Act puts the government between patient and doctor. There was no response and Romney did not elaborate on his original comments. Neither he, nor his campaign, has offered any evidence to back the claim.
  • American Medical Association president, Jeremy Lazarus, issued a statement that the law “will allow patients to see their doctors earlier rather than waiting for treatment until they are sicker and care is more expensive.”

Dow Chemical decided to build a plant in Saudi Arabia, rather than Oklahoma, due to the impact of environmental regulations on the supply of natural gas.

  • In 2007, Dow signed a memorandum of understanding with the oil giant Saudi Aramco, to build a “world-scale chemicals and plastics production complex” in Saudi Arabia. This $20 billion joint venture would be the largest of its kind in the world.
  • This happened years before Romney’s claims (which occurred in June 2012) of an Oklahoma rejection. Romney was asked to clarify and back his statements up with fact, he did not respond. In fact, Oklahoma was not even in the Dow Chemical discussion where Saudi Aramco was concerned. There is no evidence, anywhere, which shows Oklahoma was even in consideration for a Down Chemical Plant.
  • The Deputy General Counsel of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, Don Haskler, said he had never heard of Dow Chemical interest in Oklahoma.

Obamacare adds trillions to our deficits and to our national debt

  • The Congressional Budget Office, in 2010, stated that the health care law lowers the deficit, by about $124 billion over 10 years. In 2011, when Republicans offered an alternative bill to repeal the health care law, the CBO said that it increased the deficit, by about $210 billion over 10 years.
  • Why should I say more? The CBO, a non-partisan division, does the cost estimates for laws like this

When I, Mitt Romney, was Governor of Massachusetts we didn’t just slow the rate of growth of our government, we actually cut it.

  • Government spending actually increased 5% each year he was in office.

Barack Obama is the only president to ever cut $500 Billion from Medicare

  • The ACHA reduces the amount of future spending growth in Medicare, it does not cut Medicare.
  • Reagan cut Medicare by reducing payments to hospitals, and he cut benefits by raising deductibles.
  • George H.W. Bush cut benefits by repealing a law that would have expanded coverage for drugs and catastrophic illness.
  • Clinton cut Medicare by changing payments to doctors and other providers, which could be considered to have an indirect effect on beneficiaries.
  • Obama cut future Medicare spending but expanded benefits.

President Obama has opened up no new trade relationships with other nations

  • I suppose the deals with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama doesn’t count. Yes, that was sarcasm.
  • I realize I’m not spending much time on this statement, but that’s because it’s so idiotic it doesn’t deserve more than my sarcasm. I did, however, give you SEVEN sources.  Six of those sources are the vote records in the House and Senate.

Barack Obama never worked in the private sector before he was elected to President.

  • 1983-1984 Research Assistant at Business International Corp. in New York City.
  • 1985-1988 Community Organizer – Developing Communities Project in Chicago;
  • 1993-2004 Associate, and then a Partner – Chicago law firm of Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. This job overlapped with his time in the Illinois Legislature.

I don’t have lobbyists running my campaign

  • One of Romney’s top advisors, Ron Kaufman, is a “major player” Washington Lobbyist and  is chairman of Dutko Worldwide, which has lobbied for American Pacific Corp., American Trans Air, Amgen,  and AT&T.
  • Ben Ginsberg, the campaign’s national counsel, is a partner in the firm Patton Boggs, a large lobbying firm that has represented Kaiser Aluminum, Lucent Technologies, the Venetian Casino Resort and many others. His bio on the firm’s Web site boasts that “Mr. Ginsberg represents a variety of clients on Capitol Hill on a wide range of issues including appropriations, trade, broadcasting and health care.”
  • Al Cardenas is chairman of the Romney Hispanic Steering Committee, a finance co-chairman for the campaign and a frequent spokesman for Romney. He is a partner in Tew Cardenas, a lobbying firm with offices in Washington, Miami and Tallahassee. Records show he has lobbied for Progress Energy, Bell South, the Florida Association of Realtors and the Recreational Fishing Alliance, among others. His Web site boasts that “He has been named as one of Washington, D.C.’s top lobbyists by The Hill newspaper.”
  • Barbara Comstock, an adviser and frequent spokeswoman for the Romney campaign, is a founding partner of Comstock Corallo, which has lobbied for the Hearst Corp. and the National Association of Broadcasters.
  • Vin Weber, the Romney campaign’s policy chairman, is considered one of Washington’s premier lobbyists. He is chief executive of Clark & Weinstock, which has represented Microsoft, Pfizer, Texas Instruments, General Electric and many others.
  • Let me put this simply for you: “Tricky” Mitt Romney is up to his ass in lobbyists. Look at the list and who they represent. Drugs, Healthcare, Big Business. Romney has been bought and paid for. What kind of idiot would broadcast that by putting all the lobbyists on his campaign staff? Wake up, he’s slapping you in the face with it and laughing that we are too stupid to see it.

I just talked about guns. I told you what my position was, and what I did as governor, the fact that I received the endorsement of the NRA.

  • Romney later recanted this statement, stating “Well, they didn’t officially endorse me. But many of them were working the phone banks for my campaign.”

So, there you go. The list of Romney Lies, complete with bullet points and at least 2 sources for every lie including when he said it, and when it was confirmed that he lied.

This post was written, of course, specifically for CoFemale. In her conversation with me, or rather I should call it self-righteous attacking, she kept talking about “prove to her that Romney Lied”, “You’re not giving me facts, you’re just calling him a liar.” It didn’t matter what I said, she continued on her ignorant rant demanding proof. In fact, at one point, I couldn’t stop laughing because she was using Mitt’s own one-liners. She told me to “Put up or Shut up.”

She kept stating that the burden of proof was on me and even made the comment that she “rested her case”. Seriously, I kid you not. As if Twitter was a courtroom and 140 characters was enough to post proof and make a case. It was ridiculous.

I told her that I’d be happy to offer her proof that Romney is a liar once I was able to get back on the computer. As, I had told her my 12-year-old son was on the computer at the time. Yet, she still raged on for proof. She must have watched a lot of Mitt Romney interviews because she was deflecting and redirecting accusations like a seasoned politician.

Finally she stumbled at one point, so I went for the jugular. She accused me of not calling Obama a liar, and I reminded her what my first post said, that neither Obama nor Romney should be in office and that the American People deserve better than anyone that lies to them. At that point, she stumbled around a bit, and I said, “So what you’re saying is that you leapt to assumptions, without actually reading, and then jumped on me like a jackass?”

Oh, at that point I became such a bad guy. I was name calling her. I told her I didn’t call her any names, what she did was kind of a jackassery thing to do. If she wants to accept the role of a jackass, that’s fine with me.

Personally, after all that, I can categorically declare that CoFemale is completely ignorant of Truth and follows Romney blindly. I paid attention to her timeline and, after pulling her crazy act on me, she was back to degrading other people. Remember, this is the woman who describes herself as a Christian Woman.

I would say that is evidence that Christianity has become one of the most vocal hate groups since the Klu Klux Klan. Do we need sources for that too? I can give them. In the name of God, Religion, and Christianity, some of the most inane hate driven comments and actions are being performed.

Anyway, CoFemale, I doubt you’re going to even read this, because you’re a part of the problem, nowhere near being part of the solution. You don’t care about truth. You’re on a bandwagon without actually knowing what you’re doing.  Educate yourself before you open your mouth. Honestly, it may not be written in the Constitution, but you do have the Right to Shut Up.

Now, I have categorically proven that Mitt Romney is, and has been, a liar. But, that’s ok. People like you will ignore that and blindly follow him anyway. You asked for the proof, I’ve given it to you. Do something good for yourself and take a look at your supposed hero candidate. If Romney gains the Presidency, you will see his Business Lobby buddies getting cabinet seats. Then Corporations are going to gain more power in this country.

You don’t have to believe me now, but if all this proof isn’t enough, I’ll send you a tweet if/when Romney proves me right.

One last thing: After I went through all this trouble (unnecessarily, as I don’t need to prove anything to you), why don’t you prove he’s NOT a liar. Because, as best I can tell, it would have been easier for me to write about what Romney HASN’T lied about. It would have been a shorter list.

For those of you just reading along, I’ll attach a txt file with the full conversation. I always say never argue with an idiot, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. Well, CoFemale didn’t beat me with experience, she beat with me a pure ignorance to even caring about the truth. I feel bad for Sheep.
